The party began searching the grounds of the orcan camp. Afraid they might be interrupted by the sister camp just over the ridge, they set up a guard watch and moved the captured orc in to the tent. Marci was able to evaluate that the orc most likely had not gotten off enough to signal the other camp. Patrick went over to the pile of material set off from everything else and rummaged through it. He found various personal effects of a traveller. Blankets, supplies, backpacks, silk clothes with the monogram M.X. , two books and an extremely heavy chest that was no more than 1 foot square. The books and chest he took.
Clark checked the chest for traps and attempted to open it to no avail. Patrick attempted to break it open by smashing it against a boulder, but the box would not even dent. So he then put it in the fire to try and burn the binding lumber, but it only got warm and would not burn. Stumped and suspecting magic at play, Clark cast a Detect Magic and found the aura strong on the box. He then checked the other materials they had rummaged and found that the purple silk shirt also radiated a a strong aura.
They examined the shirt and found that a key had somehow been sewn in to the material. Figuring this for the key to the box, they tried to extricate it. Patrick asked (somewhat abashedly because he was asking the woman in the party) if Marci knew anything about sewing and if there was a way to remove the key. She said yes, placed the shirt on the ground and hacked at it with her sword. The shirt however did not give way. Patrick could not believe his eyes and attempted to disbelieve what he saw. The shirt shimmered and changed form to a fine shirt of Mithril Mail, key still locked inside. At this point, Patrick decided it would be better to head home with their find.
On the road back, putting several hours between them and the camps, Marci noticed that there was an extreme lack of wildlife present on their journey. During the 2nd watch that night, they found out why. Walter Merrick and Clark spotted three figures sneaking up on the party campsite. They quickly moved to awaken the sleepers quietly. As they turned back to see the assailants, there were now only two humaoid figures slinking towards them. They let them close ground.
Once in range, Patrick and Marci let loose arrow shots at the left target only to see them magically bounce off. Nord sprang from his crouch and charged the nearest one that was the target on the right, Seladon let loose a Faerie Fire to expose the two targets that were revealed to be Drow Elves. The female figure that Nord charged attempted to let loose a spell that apparently misfired. His charge seemed to surprise her. The group moved to engage. Seledon then let loose with a Summon Insect spell, directing it at the female Drow. Clark, now realizing the situation, wheeled and cast a Magic Missile at the female and Nord, looking for an advantage, disengaged and attempted to charge the Drow again, this time striking her as Seladons insect attacked.
She dropped to the ground and stopped moving. From above an eerie scream was heard. The group looked up to see something never before seen. A creature with the upper body of a Drow and the lower body of a Grell. It levitated above the group and began to swoop down.
The male drow was fully engaged by Jack, Clark and Marci, exchanging blows. Marci was caught by a deep sword cut that sent her reeling to the ground, not dead but badly wounded. Several attacks later, the male was dropped by the group. Marci tried to crawl away from the battle. But the thing had eyes for her alone. As it came down, it shreiked for her to return its armour. Marci was holding the Mithril shirt. From behind, Patrick shot an arrow that caught the thing in the back and it dropped immediately to the ground, not dead but stunned. Those not engaged closed on it. Seladon redirected his bug swarm to the creature. Walter Merrick cast Magic Missile from his book several times at the thing.
The creature rose and moved in on Marci who attempted to get away. As she moved away it struck with a tentacle, stinging with a poison that Marci shook off. Nord raced from the dead drow towards the thing and missed with his charge attack. The creature responded by attacking with several tentacles and dropped Nord with the damage and poison. The creature kept after Marci demanding the armour and finally an arrow shot from Patrick dropped it. The insect swarm flowed over the creature and began to devour it. They buried the three under a Plant Growth spell.
The rest of the night proved quiet and the group made double time back to the outpost. They met up with a mounted patrol and were escorted back. They cleaned up and were fed with good camp food as they were debriefed by Raifer. Agamemnon had finally joined the outpost and between them all they began to examine the finds. Several detects found magic and Agamemnon found evil in the Mithril shirt. Gilthon attempted to open the chest only to discover that there had to be some form of magic to open the box. They attempted to have the outpost armourer remove the key from the shirt only to have it move on its own to avoid being struck or cut. The shirt was obviously some form of sentient being. Then the thoughts went to using the shirt to open the chest directly. It was placed around the box and amazingly, it opened.
Taking precautions to protect themselves, they carefully opened the case to find that the box was completely lead lined and held only a red velvet bag. The bag eminated no evil but great levels of magic. Slowly, Raifer opened the bag to find 8 gems inside. He removed them and found that each was extraordinary in size and value. A closer inspection revealed an inscription on each. Raifer immediately contacted King Al-Alin to reveal his find. The king responded by sending a wizard and two elven sages (refugees from Simbala) to inspect. They surmised that these were some powerful form of magic to be used as, most likely, Trap The Soul gems. They were able to read the inscriptions as well, which would equate to the intended target.
S.D., Elena, Ox Baker, Rollin Hand, Joram, Jockbar, Raifer and a name no one recognized, Pavkar Gruntaglius Demonslium Juntaworm, were the names they found. They surmised that the only way to destroy the gem was for the intended victim to shatter it. Raifer did just that and the gem exploded into a cloud of vapor. The sages identified that result as showing the gems were created by some off plane being. They contacted S.D. to let him know, upon which he immediately Teleported to the site. After discussions, he destroyed the gem bearing his name and Rollin destroyed his (having been at the outpost to train Raifer). S.D. offered to return the other gems to the folks residing in Midway and also to take the odd named one for safe keeping.
This material gave indication that the war was about to move to a whole new level. probably on another plane.
