The group investigated the gems a little more. This time casting a Comprehend Languages spell to see if the strange name meant anything. They found that the first name translated to "Hubert" and the third name to "Demonspawn". The other two parts had no common tongue equivalent. John Z. pondered that this person was likely some other powerful being that the evil ones that created these gems wanted out of the way, perhaps even Jurgen Prochnow or one of his "brothers". S.D. Decided to take the gem back to Midway and perform a Legend Lore on it to see if he could glean any other information about the named person.
Nord reiterated his purchase offer for the captured magic user spell book. He truly wanted to destroy it. After some examination and a Dispel Magic by John, he took it along with the outpost blacksmith, Nevol, and tried to destroy it. First they tried to burn it in the forge, but it would not burn. Then he attempted to hack it with his axe, but found that it did not cut through. Thinking he did not hit it that well, the smith resharpened the blade and Nord went at it again. This time they decided to take the book out of the post and try it there. John had warned them that they were about to unleash the stored magical energy contained in the pages. The wandered a couple hundred yards from the post and tried again. This time, with the smith holding the book with tongs, Nord smote the tome and cleaved it in two. The magic attempted to hold the book together but was undone as he ripped his axe from the book. The book had somehow grabbed on to the blade as it separated. As he pulled it away, the book exploded, releasing the stored magic. Nord was blasted back 30 feet and lay lifeless on the ground. The smith was blasted back against the nearest wall, but was not killed, just badly wounded. Fortunately, John had gone to summon the clerics atthe post and was just arriving with Parker and Seladon (who got a big laugh out of the sight) and they were able to revive the two men. It was decided to place Seladon in charge of 'watching' Nord from now on to keep him a little more protected from the effects of magic.
They reached the three way intersection. Listening down the corridors they heard the gurgling of water down the left (obviously from the mining area) and saw a lantern down the right (where they knew the barracks area was). They proceded down the right to investigate. The first door they reached was closed. Sliding it open they entered to see the barracks room empty except for three dead Githyanki bodies dangling from ropes, hung in the middle of the room. After a quick inspection of the room they found a nasty char stain and some deep claw marks on the floor. From what, they could not tell.
They moved on to the next room, where the lantern was hung and found inside a mound of bones. Closer inspection showed them to be the remains of Githyanki, picked clean and piled in the room. Then they heard something from the next room. The group moved quickly to see. They entered the room and saw nothing, but heard heavy breathing from inside. They approached the sound and found an emaciated Xvart hiding under the bed. He identified himself as Tinovar. They cautiously questioned him and he shared his story.
Tinovar worked the mine cars and was inside the tunnels when the "Warrior Githyanki" came. They destroyed everything, killing all the local ones and clearing out the mining area. He had hid in his cart hoping to elude detection. He watched in horror as many of his Xvart breathren were killed before his eyes along with his captors. He watched in stunned silence as they tortured the slavers and hung the three in the other room as a message to those still alive. Then, he also saw a horrifc sight. Some form of Gold worm that slinked through the halls and ate people at will. It tortured and killed many Githyanki and then fed what was left behind to smaller ones that looked like it but also had what he described as "a turtle shell" around each one. They picked the bones clean and made the pile in the adjoining room. Before they all left this worm went to the halls end and caved in the exit, trapping him where he was. This was three weeks ago.
Tinovar greedily ate the food that was offered to him and then made a hasty retreat after the party told him that the cave entrance was now clear. The group pressed on and checked out the rest of the mining area. They found another 6 pounds of that strange mineral, which they took. They found little else but evidence of what the Xvart had told them except one very interesting item. In the assaying room was found some strange chemicals and some trace remains of the mystery mineral. They took the chemicals deducting that they were likely used to identify the ore. Now with the day used in exploration, they rested one of the barracks room and prepared to delve deeper into the mountain to find other targets.
The next morning they moved on. Raifer left behind his acquired Silver Sword, not wanting to take it down deep in the caves with himself fearing it would make him to much a target. They traversed the hall and noticed that they were moving considerably down. After a walk of several miles spotted a difference in the dust pattern on the floor. They searched and found a secret door that led to a large empty hall. The room had a few beds and a couple of chairs. It had the look of a staging point. It was likely used as a safe room to gather and organize or sleep the night. They moved on. Several miles later as they turned a corner, a lantern was spotted ahead. Sounds of talking and 'chittering' could be heard. the group slowly approached and prepared to attack.
They charged in to the room, Raifer leading the way, and spotted 5 Thri-Kreen warriors and 2 Githyanki. On the far wall was a shimmering blue circle. The group moved in and engaged. In the corner, one Githyanki drew two swords, one a Silver sword, and charged, the other flipped the table he sat at and ducked behind it. The Thri-Kreen charged with their Glaive like weapons. The group was a little bottled in the doorway as they attempted to break in to the room. John, spotting the wizard like Githyanki behind the table fired a Lightning Bolt at him and hit it. The battle was begun.
Blows went back and forth with the Thri-Kreen not hitting with their glaives except for the one engaged with Kunder, who would take a beating in the fight. John then Summoned and Earth Elemental and oddly enough was answered by the same on that he had summoned the first time they had been in the caves. It appeared to respond well and attacked. John placed him behind the Githyanki warrior that had moved in on Kunder, Agamemnon and Duther. The wizard cast a Magic Missile at John and struck with 5 projectiles. The shot only served to destroy the remnants of John's Armour spell and nick him physically. Attacks were exchanged, the Thri-Kreen had much more success with their throwing wedges and wounded several party members with them. The party slowly chipped away at these intimidating creatures. The Gith warrior then slashed at Kunder, taking a large cut with the Silver Sword. The defenders seemd to have the upper hand.
The battle then changed. The wizard wheeled, turning away from the party and cast at thin air. At that moment, Jim Nicholson appeared next to it, trying to attack it. The Earth Elemental landed a crushing blow on the Gith Warrior, dropping him to the ground. Noze dealt the death blow to the first of the Thri-Kreen engaged. The battle was now to the aggressors. The Warrior rose and attempted to shift away from the mass of bodies, he was now engaged with 4. But as he did, Agamemnon dealt him another critical blow and the Earth Elemental continued to pound him. The wizard in the corner unleashed a Lightning Bolt in to Jim's chest and he dropped. It then turned and moved to engage the battle. As he did, Indigo Jones let loose his own magic missile, inflicting one dart. The Gith Wizard was shocked and amused asking the question to Indigo while laughing, "Why are you here?"
The Thri-Kreen pressed on and scored two critical hits on Raifer and Kunder, but niether dropped. Agamemnon, staning next to Kunder, cast several Cure Serious Wounds to keep him upright. Meanwhile, Parker Rose entered the fray using a Spiritual Hammer to strike any in her way. While not doing a large amount of damage, she seemed to be enjoying herself, looking for targets. At that point the Earth Elemental finished off the the warrior. and the Wizard, sensing a problem, let go of a Fireball that filled the room and struck almost every party member. The worst was taken by Indigo, who would have been killed were it not for his Armour spell. Parker charged the wizard but spotted Jim, down and apparently not breathing, and moved to revive him.
Duther fired across the room att he wizard and missed. The bolt flew past and into the shimmering circle behind it and disappeared. Thinking that it would use that to escape, John tried to drop it with another Lightning Bolt, but the wizard took the shot and moved off through was apparently a Gate. The group quickly finished off the last of the Thri-Kreen that they had been whittling away at. Meanwhile, Parker cast her healing spells on Jim and brought him back around. When she turned to Raifer to let him know that he was now awake, Jim reactivated his Ring of Invisibility and disappeared.
The group now gathered to recover and decide on the next course of action.
