It became obvious to the party living in the Drow village that a more feminine authority figure was needed to create the respect and favor needed to support the cause. Sid and Rod tried to convince Ursula that she needed to step up and become the leader. If not in actuality, at least in presence and visibility. But lead she must or the concept of gaining support for themselves would likely be lost. Ursula spent time with Daliah and was summarily abused by the lord mother of Jesper in a taunting and antagonistic fashion. When finally asked for specific requests, Daliah deigned to commit resources for the cause.
For her part, Daliah would send forth some of her own spies to investigate the links the White Ninja had with the adversary. A possible undermining of that alliance chief on her mind. The group would attempt to plant a spy at Ox Baker's orphanage in the Intercities as a way of collecting information. Further, Daliah would send emmisaries to the Svirfneblin tribes that have decided to ally and ask that they investigate for a quick underground entrance to Al-Alin.
The group hitched a ride with the wizard union caravan, asking if they were headed in the direction of Clifftown. Fortunately, they were willing to change their route to suit the need. Rod decided that while on the way to Clifftown to find the Night Hag, it would convenient to try and collect the heart of a virgin. With the aplomb of his calling, he and Ursula went out to the riverside park of Cross River, a town they were stopped in along the way. There the set themselves up as a couple wandering through the park.
Their first attempt was unsuccessful as the small child they wanted to accost only got spooked by their approach and ran off with his mother. The plan to use flowers as a hook was dropped. They then just wandered through the area, waiting for another target. This time, while avoiding the park attendent who lights the lamp posts, they found three young girls walking home from the local market. Discovering that Ursula, in her new vampiric form has no command of her clerical abilities after sun down, they waited until the girls were in a more hidden section of the park and then set upon them. Rod quickly garrotted the head from the first whil Ursula sank her teeth in the neck of the second. When the third tried to run, Ursula, with her vampiric quickness, swooped upon her and dispatched her as well.
The two left the headless body in the walk and attempted to disguise the vampire bite if the second by mutilation and hid her body in the bushes. The third they took back to remove her heart. Rod, with great pleasure vivasected the still barely alive girl while Ursula removed the still beating heart. The police came by briefly to question, but were quickly dismissed.
When they finally arrived at Clifftown, the group set up shop in the best hotel in town. The idea was to attract attention to themselves. What they didn't plan on was the commotion that happened outside the hotel when they were eating dinner, looking to pick a fight. Outside, a lot of attention was being collected and Dion finally went to the window to see the sights. There to everyones amazement were a pack of lower sub-demons shambling down the street, commanded by two Drider.
The group immediately spilled in to the avenue and engaged the creatures. It was quickly discovered that magic was needed to hit the demons and that the Drell poison was also ineffective. The battle was frantic while magic flew in all directions. Willard, once again, attacked like a wererat possessed. Dion charged straight to one of the drider for direct combat. The creature let Dion know it was here to stop them and that he was the freak. Dion was wounded severely, but was able to eventually dispatch the creature with the help of Rod. The battle finally ended with the last few demons destroyed by the still berserked Willard who came to his senses quickly after the battle.
The group serched the bodies and found a military command order sheet. The orders read:
Command Post DELTA
Orders 1-325
Alternate religion in progress.
Collect all items.
Cut off at Clifftown.
Command Authorization : L
Destroy at all costs
The group then noticed that the once crowded street had emptied out. No signs of onlookers were found, except one old man watching from the second story window of his hotel room. Dion quickly flew up and grabbed the man who was trying to hide. The group started to question him only to find that not much influence was needed to get him to talk. They wanted information about the drider, which he did not have, but when the Night Hag was mentioned, it was obvious he knew something. They quickly found out that there was a Hag collecting a soul at a town address and the man supplied it. Whereupon Rod plunged his dagger in to the mans heart. He dropped, convulsing. After a few moments of the siezures, a brown ooze issued forth from his belly and seeped in to the ground without a trace.
The group used the dead drider body for Speak with Dead questioning. Its two answers were : Yes, Llolth was alive, and command post delta was on the 85th level of the abyss.
No sooner had this ended that the group decided to try and catch the hag in the act. They went to the mans house and broke in, only to find him asleep in horrible condition, tossing and turning. He was gaunt, emmaciated, thrashing abouts and worn out. There was a Night Mare waiting on the roof of his house. These facts could only mean that the Hag must be here, but where. They were unable to find her and went back to the hotel.
They prepared for her return the next night and while experimenting found that Ursula's unholy symbol also functioned as an item of clerical spell storing. It enabled her to use her clerical spells while in vampiric form. They went back tot he man's house the second night and found him in the same condition. Rod decided to end his pain, hoping it would flush out the Hag. It only killed the man and sent the Hag away, riding her night mare. They now needed another victim and Rod set down to sleep, trying to entice her.
The ploy worked as the hag come to Rod. What he did not know was what she could do to his ego. She grabbed his soul and sent it riding through the most unspeakable nightmares immaginable. So horrific that they traumatized even the hiddeous Rod Usher. The group awoke him when they realized there was nothing they could do to stop it. When he came around, the hag once again left. This time, when challenged by Sid to show some nerve, Rod made the attempt to call the Nightmare as his war horse. He drew his dagger and removed his testicles as sacrifice. The act overcame his ability to sustain consciousness, but as he fell, he sent out his call. The nightmare heard the call and threw the Hag, returning to the house. The group quickly binded the wound and brought Rod around. He went to the steed and was led to understand fro the nightmare that the Hag would be back for Rod's truly evil soul.
They set up shop onvce again at the man's residence, a shaken and scared Rod refusing to sleep. The group looked for volunteers to take his place. While Sid and Ursula decided to step up, the Hag secretly came and cast a spell on Rod to send him in to sleep. The two leaders decided that Gug for was their best hopr to help Rod. But how to sleep. Anton Phibes stepped up and hypnotized them to sleep. They met in Ethereal dreams. The Hag riding the back of Rod Usher, the Gug floating in to attack, and the summoned demon the Hag had called. They fought on for some time, Rod was able to gain the upper hand on the Hag when Sid used his magic to attack the Hag instead of the Demon that was attacking their Gug form.
Once free from her, Rod was able to summon his new steed to help. Together they trampled and slashed at her demonic form. One last shot from Sid sent her in to unconsciousness, but did not kill her. The summoned demon then backed off and offered a cease fire. Quickly accepted, it gated back to its' own plane. The hag was now at their mercy. Rod drew a vial and a pin. Scraping her flesh to cause scratch wounds hoping to draw forth the vital ichor. Several attempts were made and eventually enough of the bodily fluid was brought forth and collected. The Gug form was able to bring itself back to the Prime plane, but they needed to wake Rod. When they did, a quick rummage through his backpack found the vial and its' precious cargo.
