After a day of rest and an impromptu sacrifice the Centaur herd was assumed to have been well ahead and out of range. The party gathered up their things and began moving on again towards Teluna. The travel was quiet and easy until the soil under their feet became far more sandy, slowing their pace and making footing challenging. They proceeded for two days without incident but day three brought trouble. Cruising along a ridge through the sandy territory movement was spotted rumbling under the sand. Just after being sighted grabs emerged from the ground and raced towards the caravan.
Furion cast Fly and floated out of the back of the wagon. Illiana spotted more movement on the opposite side of the ridge and called it out as she donned her Ring of Invisibilty. Moving in to the line of crabs from the air Furion unleashed an Icy Missile stunning the beast as Rennala took the first hits from the crabs. The battle engaged, Books cast Prayer to aid the party as the crabs on the opposite side emerged from the sandy soil.
Furion followed up with another Icy Missile teaming up with a Spiritual Whip from Books destroying the first of the mob. Illiana maneuvered behind another, scoring a backstab finishing off the second. The group was now engaged from both sides, splitting their attention. Curly suffered a few hits from a crab as Hal cast a Faerie Fire lighting up three of the creatures. Morgana destroyed another using a Hailstone spell. But Gwyn’s attempt to call forth a Holy Flail failed him. Bad timing for the group as the last of the crabs, easily twice the size of the others, crawled out from the ground and moved in to engage Cord.
Gwyn responded with a Spiritual Whip, striking the huge crab. Books also used the same to smite another. Hal used an Entangle to tie up two of the creatures threatening their off side, catching one and slowing the second. In range of these crabs, Morgana brought forth a Flame Blade. A small grouping of the party was now hemmed in by crabs. Books attacked them with a Flame Hand and Gwyn a Spiritual Whip to push them back. Rennala, as a crab closed in on her, attempted a bow shot but the arrow skittered off the carapace of the crab. The creature reached out and clawed Rennala with a critical shot causing more damage than could be seen, crippling her with internal injuries.
The huge crab battled with Cord who struck a blow with his sword, chipping away at it. Morgana let loose a Faerie Fire to surround the big one. But Hal brought the final blow. Letting go a Psionic Blast the giant crab began to steam from within the shell. Cord spotted the oddity and dodged away as the beast overheated and exploded from within the shell, crumbling to the ground. The number of crabs was now dwindling and Books dropped one with a sword attack, Curly finished his with another slice and Furion used a Snow Cone spell to drop a third. As that went on Gwyn reached Rennala and healed her with a Cure Serious, relieving the pain from the critical blow. Furion closed in from the aIr on the entangled crab and struck down on it to kill yet another as Illiana used a Magic Missile to kill another. There were now only two remaining and they were handled by attacks from Cord and Furion.
The battle concluded, the group spent time healing the wounded and field striping the crabs for food and the removing the shells in hopes to sell them for spell components. They gathered enough food and Preserved enough to feed themselves for the remainder of the trip in to Teluna. The shells were stashed in the wagon.
Days 4 and 5 passed uneventfully as they trudged through the sandy path. They met a few groups of travelers heading past them in the opposite direction but there were in incidents. Early day 6 they reached the outskirts of Teluna. They wound their way towards the city proper passing a number of homes and farms occupying the rural outskirts. As they moved in they paused at one ranchers corral to inquire about the area. They asked if he knew of any centaurs but he had only heard rumors and stories but had no firsthand knowledge. One tale he had heard was the local government and businesses had dealings with them but he could not say that as a fact. The discussion completed they moved on towards the large city looming ahead.
It was as they neared the more dense area of the city limits things changed…. dramatically. Illiana and Furion were both shocked to see 3 White Ninjia clad individuals casually walking in a group along the street as if there were nothing odd about it. They passed word to the whole group who decided to ‘play it cool’ and not make a scene of what they saw. They approached a couple of town guards to ask some questions about the area and where they could find lodging. The guards were quite helpful directing them to one of the inns along the city outer loop. They also informed them it better to keep their wagon out of the inner areas of the city. As they continued on the witnessed two more White Ninjia greeting the guards as if they were old friends.
They were now on the look out for anything they could take in. Signs, postings, clan colors, anything. Books, who had been studying the local Imai Empire common came across a posting board where a flyer was written completely in that tongue containing instructions for clan members and a location in town where they should report in. He made note of the location. The group moved along and found the inn. Rooms were available for them, their horses and wagon. They all agreed it was pricy but they were dealing with the big city markup. Satisfied they had a reasonable deal they checked in. When Morgana inquired about any local bath house facilities they concierge provided them with a reference note which entitled them to a discount at the site. Most of the group decided to go and enjoy. Some even found special bath salts available, buying them to take home.
The continued with night watches to be safe. In the morning they were disturbed by the sounds of a fight happening outside the inn. Hal and Cord went to investigate as Curly woke the rest of the team. Outside they found three White Ninjia involved in a street fight with nine locals. Hal made use of his ESP to read the thoughts of many of the participants, hoping to gather some insights. He found the White Ninjia a little more complex than just thugs. One was conflicted about how to take down the largest of the town folk without killing another person. The locals were definitely looking for trouble and against the Imai folk. He also read some of the onlookers and found these folks decidedly supporting the locals. The fight played out with the Ninja disabling a few of the locals who chose to flee when their numerical advantage was no longer sufficient. As they fled a few local city guards approached to ‘clean up’ the scene.
The local skirmish done, the group made their plans to investigate the city. A tip to the concierge provided a local map with some custom directions on how to avoid problems and cut a direct line to where they wanted to visit. The found the Wizard’s Guild first. The building was enormous. The questions regarding the permanent fog light spell were fruitless so they chose to visit the very busy shop attached. Books was interested in a few items and asked specifically about a Ring of Invisibility. The price was high but he was still interested. The interaction changed when the shop attendant asked for his authorization. Books’ unknowing response drove the shop attendant to dismiss him and move on to the next customer. The rest of the group was dismissed similarly and they chose to move along.
On the way to the next stop they passed the location Books had noted from the flyer earlier. The place was a large walled castle type building in the middle of the city. More than a tad ostentatious and quite in the open. A property the group was unfamiliar seeing from the White Ninjia but consistent with everything they have seen on the streets. They visited a couple of weapon shops, an armor shop and a components shop. They were able to buy a few items and sell the crab remnants but they continued to slam against the need for an ‘authorization’ preventing them from buying certain items. Their conversations did pay off the concept that these came from the city government, that they were not likely to obtain one and the very busy wizards guild shop was actually an illusion.
Their day of investigation completed they returned to the inn to crash for the night. An early start the next day would see them leave town with three options. Travel east along the coast risking dangers from the ocean, travel closer to the forest as they headed out south risking an encounter with the centaurs or struggle through the sandy path they came in on….
And now.... another Halrfold original bardic tale.....
