They’re Probably Centaurs…

Jump to Hal's song

The morning arrived as the group gathered their things and headed out of the forest. They broke in to the clear and turned north towards Sentonville. There was an odd dust cloud over the horizon in the direction they were now going. They could not make out what was causing it, only that it was there. The cloud appeared each new day as they travelled. The second morning some of the group could make out a low rumble emanating from the direction of the dust cloud, but again, there was no clue what was causing it. They made reasonable time for three days.

Late on the fourth day their peace was interrupted by an arrow sailing in, landing just to the side of Morgana. She raised the alarm for all as a second volley rained in. Furion leaped from the back of the wagon and Hal used his ability to Dimension Door over to just below the ridge ahead of their group. At that, the aggressors came charging over the rise, revealing themselves as Centaurs. Three charged ahead wielding lances while four more held position firing arrows. Hal responded casting an Entangle that slowed two and stopped the third. Furion cast a Fly spell to enable his approach while a third volley from the Centaurs flew in.

A free centaur charged on to Morgana with his lance but dropped it in the attack. She responded with an attempted Thorn Throw that fizzled. Hal cast a Blur on himself to assist his defense and Books and Gwyn cast Spiritual Whips. But Gwyn’s failed to trigger. Now Cord, having secured the wagon, began firing his bow striking targets. Books was hit by an incoming shot that struck his arm critically, causing him great discomfort with any actions using that arm. Then the other free centaur had managed to close in on Rennala executing a charge attack. But, yet again, the weapon fell from the hands of the aggressor.

The battle was now fully engaged. Morgana created a Flame Blade for he use. Hal reached in to his bag of tricks and issued a Psionic Blast at one of the centaurs sending it into a furious rage. Books loosed another Spiritual Whip against the entangled centaur in an effort to cut it down as Cord dropped the first with a bow shot. Books followed up with another that brought the centaur to the edge. Hal traded attacks with the enraged centaur but it was Cord that finished it off with his bow. Across the battlefield, Illiana had positioned herself behind one enabling a backstab attack, scoring a deep wound on the beast. A series of spell failures followed as Morgana failed an attempt to cast Snap Dragon, Gwyn a Spiritual Whip and Illiana a Magic Missile.

The centaur archers were still firing away, this time striking Curly and Furion. Morgana’s luck continued to run bad as she failed a Hailstone spell. But Hal’s Hailstone worked hitting one centaur with a severe blow. Hal tried to use his martial Pain Touch for the first time but was not able to execute properly. Cord was able to then drop the third centaur, leaving four. But Furion, still making use of the Fly spell, was struck critically with an arrow causing him to drop to the ground as Gwyn killed the fourth with a hammer blow. Morgana cast a Faerie Fire on the centaur engaged with Hal, but Hal once again used his Dimension Door ability to blip away from the enemy.

Furion, having recovered his feet, struck a killing blow on the fifth enemy using his thin blade. Now only two remaining one of the centaurs attempted to bolt but Curly connected severing the leg muscles of the beast causing it to drop to only the front hooves. Cord finished off the sixth leaving only the crippled beast. Morgana attempted to communicate with it but the beast would not cooperate and was summarily destroyed ending the encounter.

They searched the centaurs finding a small amount of booty. They gathered up their things and moved off to put space between themselves and the battle scene. The night and entire next day were quiet allowing them to arrive in Sentonville on the seventh day out of the forest. They meandered though the outskirts of the disorganized fishing town. As they wound their way towards the center or port they spotted a strange looking humanoid. It was shorter than a Halfling, orange skinned with odd white highlights and green hair. They could not help but stare. They approached and found the man to be Ronny who shared he was an Oompa Lloompa, a race they had never heard of before. Cord turned the meeting to a very Cordial one. He and Ronny talked about sharing a meal to talk. Ronny suggested a restaurant in town called Cadbury’s for lunch. They departed with direction to the local inn to acquire accommodations.

They found the inn, secured rooms and found the restaurant Ronny suggested was a bit more ‘upscale’ than they were prepared to visit. With this knowledge a number of the group headed out to find some nicer clothing shops. But the shops did not want to address them unless they cleaned up before trying on any of their fine merchandise. So off they all went to the local bath house returning after having removed the refuse of the trip. Having done this the establishments were happy to accommodate the group, each finding something nice to meet their standards and personal taste. Now properly attired, they made their way to Cadbury’s.

As they entered the sweet smell of chocolate wafted through the room. Ronny awaited them sipping a glass of wine. He gladly shared the story of his people and their island off the northern coast of the continent. He knew of the White Ninja and Xander’s rampaging raiders. Their conversation led them to believe they probably should not loop around on their originally planned course but rather trek a little further west towards the city of Teluna where there was more likely evidence of White Ninja activity. The meal enjoyed, they left the restaurant to visit a local chocolate shop. They spent a goodly amount of gold and arranged for the purchases to be shipped back to Midway.

They spent the night and left town the next morning. It was not long before they caught sight of the dust cloud ahead once again. On the second day the idea came up to send Morgana’s Ed out ahead to investigate this source. She used an Imbue Intelligence to communicate their plan and off he flew. They continued on and it was early in the afternoon when he returned. The dust cloud was created by a large herd of cattle being driven by a number of centaurs. After a little discussion the idea was floated to have a day of rest to allow the herd to move on in front of them. And so they did. The day was spent doing maintenance activities and a sacrifice organized by Cord following an ad hoc hunt on the plains.

And now.... another Halrfold original bardic tale.....

Sentonville

(to Jimmy Buffet's 'Margaritaville')

Nibblin' on iron ration cakes
Feelin' the sun bake
on those Centaurs now covered in soil
Strummin' on my six string
On my wagon seat on Cord's left wing
Smell those Centaur
We put 'em down but it was a chore

Making our way to Setonville
Searching for a scroll for Kozmo
Some people claim that Renalla's to blame
They say fuck her but, she's not to blame
It's nobodies fault

Don't know the reason
We could've stayed there all season
With nothing to show but this incredible chocolate
We ran into Ronny
An Oompa Loompa scrawny
How he got here wasn't his fault

Now we're making our way away from Sentonville
Still searching for Kozmo's scroll
Some people claim Renalla's to blame
They say fuck her but, she's not to blame
It's nobodies fault

It seemed like Cord wanted to bury his 'riding crop'
On the back Renalla's 'back drop'
There's elk on the menu
There seems to be love in the air
She gave him a necklace
Would he return the necklace with one of his 'own'?

Now we're still making our way away from Sentonville
Still searching for Kozmo's scroll
Some people claim Renalla's to blame
They say fuck her but, she's not to blame
It's nobodies fault
