I think we should stay inside the room!

The party regrouped and healed themselves, curing as much as they reasonably could. It was still only early afternoon and they had a lot more to get through. They reformed ranks and started off deeper into the cavern. As they marched, they came across tracks in the passage. Marci was able to identify them as armoured foot prints and a quadraped animal walking side by side. What the second creature was, she could not identify, but they appeared to be walking a patrol route. They followed these tracks until they arrived at a split in the cavern passage where they took the left tunnel.

This passage led for a ways and ended abruptly in a yawning cavern, the ground dropping away sharply into the opening which extended at least 400-500 feet below them. At the bottom they could see a pool of liquid that emanated a strange blue hue. They quickly looked for secret doors but found none and decided that since it was at least 100 yards across the opening to the continuing tunnel on the far side that they would back track and take the other fork in the cavern. That passage moved sharply down as it advanced and they found themselves at the end of the way. A search for hidden doors was succesful by Noze. They checked the door for traps and then opened it. Here they found themselves at the bottom of the cavern they overlooked just a little before.

SD approached the fluid, which gave off an oily aroma. He tossed a rock in to it to see what would happen. The rock hit the fluid, made a momentary impact and slipped beneath the surface leaving no trace or ripple that it had passed. He took out a vial and scooped up some of the liquid. That which was on the outside of the vial slid off so quickly and completely as to not leave any residue of itself behind. SD asked Jockbar to detect evil on the area, but his senses had been on overload ever since they encountered the hideous worm like thing. A Detect Magic revealed that the pool was indeed magical. At that point the fluid began to bubble from the center and began to spread across the floor. John Z noticed that the door to the cavern was beginning to close on its own. Raifer ordered everyone in the room and to stay together. The door closed and the fluid level continued to rise. The group looked for another way out, but were unable to find one.

John Z and SD cast Levitation spells to rise above the fluid and everyone else began a climb up the walls. At that point, voices were heard from above. Most likely from the far side tunnel. As the group made the slow climb up the side walls, which was not a difficult climb, they made out the sounds and shape of 2 Githyanki and 2 Hell Hounds at the ledge above. A brief conversation was mumbled between the Gith, something to the effect of 'light it before it gets up here' and then a torch was thrown down. The groups fear that the fluid was flammable was now confirmed.

As the torch fell, John and SD attempted to cast an Ice Storm on it to put it out. SD's failed but John's hit the torch. Unfortunately it did not extinguish the flame. What it did though, was to cover enough of the area under the torch as it hit the surface to prevent it from igniting the fluid except for one small spot. The rest was encircled in the ice covering the surface from the spell. They all began to try and climb faster. Indigo slipped, bumping in to Noze, but both were able to catch hold and prevent falling.

Through his familiar, John Houseman, SD was able to hear the conversation from above and was able to make out words to the effect of 'Just shoot a flaming arrow at the stuff'. With that, he cast a Dimension Door and appeared on the ledge with the 4 enemies, surprising the Gith, but not the hounds who breathed fire on him. John Z cast another Ice Storm at the torch hoping to extinguish it, which he did but the flame had reached the fluid and it would not go out. But he did slow its advance giving the group a chance to climb away from the potential blast. Raifer attempted to climb just a little to quickly, slipped and could not stop his fall as he dropped down to the fluid. He struck hard and was knocked unconscious. Noticing him not moving, John Z cast a Dimension Door to reach him before he slid under the fluid and drowned. He retrieved the body and began levitating away from it again. SD began trading blows with the 4 on the ledge, striking a big blow on one of the Gith, dropping it, and a Hell hound. He shifted to engage the other warrior.

But just then, the fire spread and exploded in a blast of fire, echoing up the cavern. Most of the group had managed to climb to a safe distance from the flame, but the concussive force of the explosion shook many from their perches on the wall. Parker and Andyra hit the fluid and stood back up, Duther, Agamemnon, Nord, Noze and Marci hit hard and did not move. The blast almost shook Raifer loose from John Z, but he managed to hold on and then had his familiar, Roach Clip, fly and drag them over to the ledge. Parker spotted Agamemnon next to her and immediately slapped a Cure on him, a surprise to all because they thought all of the heal spells had been used before. This brought him back around. Jockbar jumped from his spot down in to the fluid and went to Duther, laying on hands to bring him around and help him out.

On the ledge, the Gith warrior was casting a Flame Arrow, now engaged by SD, he shot it at him only to have it blow up in his face, burning himself. SD hit the Gith with a crushing blow and dropped him as one of the hounds bit into him sharply and the other breathed fire at him again, but this time the Flame Shield power of his sword sprang up. He turned and struck the hound down, leaving one hound and a badly wounded Gith. He followed with a Cone of Cold that killed both of them.

In the pit, Agamemnon, Parker and Jockbar moved to help the others. Jockbar layed hands on Nord to bring him around and direct him to the wall to climb. Parker placed a Death's Door on Marci to hold her steady, but Agamemnon's attempt failed on Noze and he rolled over and under the fluid and drowned. Meanwhile, Andrya was overcome by the flames on top of the fluid that burned them as they tried to get out. Jockbar moved to try and lift her out. Patrick O'Furniture tied a rope to an arrow and shot it across towards him in to the wall to give Jockbar something to grab while he lifter her out. Nord reached down with a hand to assist as well, but he could not get out immediately. Neither could the clerics with the body of Marci.

Quickly they all moved now to get out as the were burned by the fire. This time Jockbar, Agamemnon and Parker were able to get up and out. Jockbar used the last of his healing and revivied Andrya. Agamemnon used an Aid spell to bring Marci back but it was not enough so he used his last heal, which he had held back before and brought back Marci who then drank a healing potion to revive herself back to a healthy point. They all climbed slowly back to the ledge to regroup. SD, John Z, and the now conscious Raifer on one side of the opening and all the rest on the other.
