The party took some time to catch their collective breath. After all, a whole lot had just happened to them. There were six party members lost, one that was turned in to some wierd slimy reptilian thing, they fought off a giant mutated Gold Dragon, several Githyanki and saw something never before seen - the great Worm like thing. It was a busy day.
The group gathered up all those bodies they could and destroyed the remains, leaving only the dragon and the mid sized worm creature (which no one wanted to touch) in tact. Joram and Bannor gathered up all of the Xvart slaves they freed and escorted them back to the base camp. The rest attended to their wounds. But the healing was not to go smoothly. It was almost as if some outside force did not want the party healed as many of the prayers failed. They managed to heal up somewhat and rested for a day or so.
During their rest, there were many Xvarts that wandered in out of the caves. They assisted them as they could and directed them out of the slave areas to safety. Raifer and SD questioned some of them about what was going on and why they were wandering free. They responded saying that the guards had disappeared a little while ago and they finally decided it was safe to wander off and see about getting free. They spoke of the mining efforts and that the Githyanki were looking for Mithril, Adamantium and a strange item called "Essence of Adamantium", a mineral that, they were told, was found in liquid form and when found, would flow forth from the stone. needless to say, this news caught their attention.
As they readied to move on, the group was reinforced by Morgan le Morte, Indigo Jones, Nord and Adrya Rublanka. They reformed their ranks and decided on moving down the side tunnel from which the dragon had emerged. There were many side tunnels dug in this natural cavern, most extending no more than 40 to 50 feet. The fissure was itself quite large and ranged in height anywhere from 40 to over 150 feet as they could estimate. With Morgan treading lightly up ahead of the group scouting, she spied a side tunnel from which spilled lantern light and the sound of a Pick Axe hammering at the rock. She and Raifer crept up slowly to investigate.
Much to their surprise, they found a single Xvart miner hacking away at the back end of a 30 foot tunnel. He was surrounded by 4 small boxes that contained some minerals and a larger chest that held a complete assayers kit. The oddity was his appearance, he looked to well kept. his clothes were not tattered like the other slaves and he obviously had better equipment. When they approached, he greeted them with caution and said little but that his axe was dulled from hacking at this one spot for 3 days and that the rock would not give way.
After some back and forth, Raifer retrieved Kundar and Noze to consult on the mining aspects of the situation. Noze attempted to use his axe to hack at the rock only to have the impact from the strike shake the implement from his hands. Never before had he encountered something so hard. He tried again and this time his axe shattered. There was obviously something odd here. The group offered protection and release for the Xvart who greeted this news warily. He even questioned their honesty and would not leave his post. Through some questioning he revealed that he was indeed a slave, but that he was treated well because he knew about the rocks and could function as an assayer. So he was taken care of and left somewhat to his own devices. He was now in a bad way because his axe had dulled so severely in his effort. Noze offered up a whetstone to sharpen the blade, which the Xvart, who finally identified himself as Vilkrade, took and employed immediately.
They discussed several options and eventually settled on this. Vilkrade would believe them and leave with them if they returned back out later. So, with an agreement in hand, the party moved on. They travelled quite some ways further down the tunnel when they began to hear the flapping of many wings echoing from all around them. Cautiously they advanced when they finally caught site of a flock of flaming bats crested a peak above them and swooped down on the party. There were many more than they could handle easily and the creatures seemed more than a little intelligent as they assaulted the party and left no figure un-attacked.
As they approached and attacked, John Z let loose a Cone of Cold and wiped out 9 of them. Some got off closing missile fire and some other Magic Missiles on them and managed to wound some of them. But both sets of spells set forth by Parker and Agamemnon once again failed. But there were so many that they moved in and engaged. When the attacked and struck their targets, they attached on to the body and began draining blood. Morgan was overwhelmed and dropped by the bats. SD tried to save her by using Magic Missile but his efforts were too little too late. When she fell, they left Morgan and headed for other targets. Everyone was attacked and almost everyone was struck by these creatures, but the group had the hardest time in striking back. Their attacks missed and in one instance, Nord actually inflicted more damage upon himself while attempting to knife one that had attached to his body.
Eventually the creatures appeared to become sated and disconnected on their own and flew away. The only party members not damaged by the bats were SD, PJ and Andrya. The rest were wounded to various degrees and some were hurt quite badly, including Yosh who had three bats attach to his body before they left or were killed. John Z and Indigo managed to save themselves a lot of damage by use of the Armour spell. The employment of this spell gave John enough time to kill one of the bats with his knife, scoring the first engage combat kill for him in as long as he could remember.
