In Midway

A new Vintner applied for the position and was hired. Gil Glensky arrived in Midway and went looking for a job. Turns out, SD was in need of just such services. Gil has now been given those responsibilities.

Also, Angela has been released from work on the latest Improved Armor spell and is now on a short break.

A surprise in the Forest

The battle was concluded. All but one of the White Ninja had been dispatched. Wounds needed attention and spells needed to be refreshed. Healing potions were quaffed and spells kept in reserve because they knew they were needed elsewhere. Books was the first to hear the hurried footsteps approaching through the wood. An elf appeared from the through the trees bearing word. Their services were needed in another area about 4 miles away. The squad there had lost contact and they suspected a breach in the lines. At that the party made all good haste towards that location. They were able to maintain a trot most of the way until the weight of armor began to take a toll. The last mile or so was covered at a walking pace allowing those under strain to regain their edge.

When they arrived in the area everyone noted the eerie silence. No animals, birds or other natural woodland sounds were audible. In fact, there was no noise at all. Yosh was the first to spot tracks leading away and he led them following the trail. A short distance on the trail Rennala was the first to catch a whiff of a scent that had that metallic essence of blood on the wind. As they came through the trees they found 5 elves, dead, lying about the floor of the forest. Here it was even more quiet than they had noticed before, if it was even possible.

It was then the surprise came. The trees around them attacked, branches swinging wildly, striking all in their range. Books reacted loosing the first combat instance of Flamehand on the closest tree. The archers fired a first volley scoring hits causing sap to ooze from the trees and Ruurik slammed his axe taking a hunk from one. But Indigo gave the group a little room with an arrow that seemed to stun or briefly stop one treant. Gwyn now had the opportunity to cast Prayer covering almost the entire battlefield.

The treants attacked with fury and it was met by the party. Books, Gwyn and Parker attacked with Spiritual Whip. Bow shots continued to pepper the trees. Patrick used a Dragonsbreath Fire arrow which hit but failed to ignite the tree. It was then Yosh changed the tide of the battle, hewing one of the treants down with a mighty blow from his axe. But his attack was mirrored by a crippling blow on Ruurik, breaking his leg, knocking him to the ground. But not all the tree attacks were as adept as one attempted to strike Parker but caught the branches in among the surrounding trees, damaging itself.

Furion’s next attack was an Icy Missile that dropped the second treant as Ruurik pulled a healing potion from his belt that worked well but was not enough to restore his broken leg. Parker pressed her attack against the largest with another Spiritual Whip. Yosh contributed with more axe blows and Rennala eluded a retaliatory attack as the tree once again damaged itself. Books added his own special touch causing one of the remaining trees to be blinded. This last tree then caught the arrows of Patrick felling it in the direction of Gwyn who was able to deftly elude the tree as it crashed to the ground.

The battle concluded, Parker healed Ruurik restoring his leg to functionality. The party collected the bodies of the 5 elves, bringing them back away from the battle area. At that they regrouped, performed some healing and took some time for the spell casters to reload what they could. About an hour in to this process sounds of another messenger approaching were heard. Caution was more the state of affairs this time as the runner was greeted by the aim of Patrick’s bow. A few questions allayed their concerns and the messenger relayed the battle appeared to be concluded and the defense of the wood successful. When seeing the dead elves it became apparent why they had lost contact. The runner asked for the group to hold the area and he would return with a team to retrieve the bodies. It was few hours later when he returned with a wagon team to bring the dead home. The party accompanied the wagon back to the central tree homes.

They were treated to comfortable beds to sleep in and recover. In the morning they were treated to a hearty breakfast and presented with gifts from Lord Evanston along with a scroll to be passed on to SD. With that the party mounted up and made their way back to Midway. It was 6 uneventful days along the road including one night in Daedelus. Upon their return several members attended the open court held by SD top deliver the news. He graciously pulled them out of the line and conducted a meeting with them in private. It was about this time when the wagons of support supplies would arrive at the trees of Lord Evanston.

Having returned and sporting a small trove of booty the group visited the new Rocksmoker business Hidden Treasures. They brought with them a number of gems and jewelry to sell. A good price was reached and a deal struck. This cash funded a small flurry of activity as Yosh visited Gunther to have a new masterwork Battle Axe made and Gwyn a new Maul. Gunther visited the Rocksmokers to discuss their agreement for Lightning Water to make better equipment as he had a few new special orders to be made. Blargg visited the local Master Carpenter to inquire about having his special trough constructed. And Rennala upgraded her riding equipment.

The only question they were now left with was…..

Next time ...

Where to next….?
