The feast continued in directions no one had ever expected. The discussions ranged all over the place, even getting rather heated at times. There were a few primary topics that commanded the attention of the crowd gathered. McMurtry's farm, his children and, well, Halrfold and McMurtry himself. Throw in the happenings in Simballa and planning for missions east to Englehome and then McMurtry's farm and then south to address the newly discovered problem with what look to be rogue elves near Daedelus.
First order of business, SD requested a number of flyer notices be posted around Midway. The town had decided to help recover the McMurtry family farm and needed help to get it done. They would be looking for farmers, woodworkers, masons and more to bring the much needed facility back to life. The goal to resuscitate the business and groom it for the daughters of the slain farmer to assume command when they were ready and able. Not to be outdone, Raifer posted notices looking for Wainwrights to hire to work for S3.
Turning to McMurtry, still inhabiting the body of Halrfold, a discussion ensued regarding his level of trust in what was transpiring. He could not believe these people would want to help him and his children merely out of the goodness of their hearts and the desire to do the right thing. But he did trust Gwyn. And the topic of his wife’s amulet came up again. This time there were people at the feast that knew the rogues that had been stopped in the Midway pass and been dispatched had what they were carrying taken to the police lockup. It was agreed to go and see if the amulet was there. McMurtry described it before they went and as the pouch of goods was spilled on to the table everyone saw the article. And SD also found, with the use of a Detect Magic spell, another item in the pouch. A stone that emitted a ping as magical.
They took the amulet, hashing over what to do with the obviously extraordinary and expensive piece of jewelry. It was decided SD would store it in a safe place in his private home as custodian until it could be turned over to the children. SD also used an Identify to determine what properties the stone had. It was an Ioun stone of regeneration. But what to do with it? They decided the group that stopped the rogues should have the opportunity to decide what happens to it. They made the list of those there and left it with the police for them to come together and collect it.
Next up, Rispin pulled SD and Jade aside to share the Crystal Ball she possessed in hopes to find out more about what was happening inside Simballa. SD gave the first attempt trying to focus on his old home but was unsuccessful. He changed his focus to the neighbors and the device came to life. Looking around he saw the woman that lived next door, playing with her children. Expanding the view, he looked around finding a window. Out the window he could see where his old home was. Only it was no longer there. Only the hewn and burned remnant of the tree remained. With nothing else to find there he changed focus to the landlord that rented the tree only to find the man was dead. So he turned to find another person only to be hit with feedback from the device causing him to break contact and cease use lest he be harmed. Jade then stepped up starting he search with her attendant when she lived in the royal tree. She found her, thin, dirty and despondent, sitting in the royal prison surrounded by other past royal support staff each in their own cell. With nothing else to see there she changed focus to her old archery instructor, also a high ranking officer in the military. She found him standing watch as a guard noting his rank had been drastically reduced. She broke contact and retired from using the device.
When the feast ended, Halrfold accompanied Gwyn back to the Egyptian temple to stay there. The group did not think it wise to leave the possessed individual in Hal’s actual residence and Gwyn readily and gladly offered his home. That night Gwyn was awakened by a knock on his door. He noticed Hal was not there. Answering the door, an acolyte nervously informed him Hal was found wandering around the temple in his sleep. They brought him back in and sat him down. Gwyn gently shook him to wake him up. As he came around McMurtry told him the body was exhausted and he thought he was ready to go but could not figure out just how.
The two talked trying to figure out what to do. McMurtry detailed his needs, recover the amulet and ensure the safety of his daughters, knowing these had been accomplished. He then turned to his last request asking Gwyn to give his word to end the villain that had killed him. Gwyn vowed to make sure the man was destroyed. McMurtry reached out his hand and as they shook they were each struck by some type of shock that knocked each of them out.
The next morning Cord received a knock on his door from an extremely nervous acolyte of the Egyptian church. He quickly requested Cord follow him and filled him in on what he knew. Gwyn and Hal were found unconscious in Gwyn's room. They raced to the temple to find the scene as described. Cord asked the acolyte to fetch a higher ranking cleric in the church to assist. He ran off as quickly as he could. A few minutes passed before a leader of the church arrived. He shared they had tried to perform traditional healing to no avail. He then tried a Remove Paralysis that had no effect. Cord suggested they send for someone from the healers which the nervous acolyte handled.
When the healer arrived they discussed what could possibly be done. The first thing they tried was a Neutralize Poison, but it also did nothing. Next the healer cast Awaken, reviving Gwyn who roused saying “… say goodbye…”. He had been in a fog but slowly gathered his wits. They turned attention to Hal casting the spell on him too. He came around, still McMurtry, spouting odd things as he came into consciousness. Once he was coherent Gwyn shared the thought racing through his mind to say goodbye. Hal said it, but nothing happened. It then occurred to Gwyn he should say it to his children. The idea rang true with everyone and they headed out for the orphanage.
Jerri gathered up the girls and brought them to his office where Gwyn spoke to them first. He gently explained the situation, offering comfort to them as they shed tears. When he was convinced they were ready he went out to bring Halrfold in. He was sincere and emotional as he bid farewell to his girls. He gave them advice and final wishes for their future. When he told them he was going “to be with their mother” he could feel the change as the spirit of McMurtry departed the body of Halrfold. Who promptly fell to the floor. The resounding thud alerted Cord outside the room causing him to rush in. He tried to revive Hal to no avail and word was sent to bring a healer. It was lucky for them the same healer came to their aid and used another Awaken to revive Hal, who was tired, exhausted and unable to walk much on his own. Cord and Gwyn helped him back to his own place to rest and recover.
All this turmoil motivated Cord to do a little personal soul searching in hopes of discovering why he had displeased his would be deity. Visiting the Norse temple he sought the advice of a cleric. He was directed to the proper area of the temple where he consulted with a higher ranking official of the church. They talked and went through the events leading up to the ‘message’ he received. What became clear was his lack of understanding of the expectations of the God of Thunder. His mistake was one of hubris, taking the life of a helpless downed foe he had no hand creating that advantage, where mercy would have been more appropriate. With this understanding the cleric suggested a spiritual guide to help him learn the ways of their religion. He referred him to Agamemnon.
And now.... another Halrfold original bardic tale.....
