The party regrouped in to the guard posts along with the 4 Xvart guards and set watches to keep an eye on activity. And during the late night they were not disappointed as they witnessed a small pack of what appeared to be infected Xvarts wandering in and out of the entrance. But this pack wandered away for good sometime after 1 am, all except one that seemed to wander off on its own.
The next morning the party set out to explore and find what they could. First up was the armory where the Xvarts informed them that there should be a significant amount of oil and other weapons. At the door they found it covered by the white powder identified as the spore from the fungus. Carefully they opened the door and found 3 weakened and starving Xvart guards. The guards were escorted back to the guard post and the party took vials filling them with oil. Some members took vials of the poison used by the Xvarts that was stashed in the storeroom. Warrex grabbed a number of bear traps and set about laying them in the alternate entrance ways.
Gathered up, they set off down the side tunnel where they found tracks of a lone Xvart. Following the trail they came to a merchant area of the catacombs and spotted a light in one of the shops. They neared the butcher shop and had to unlock the door. Raifer broke his picks trying to work the lock but Books opened the door and entered. As they entered a grenade lobbed over to their area from behind the counter and exploded with an acid splash and a flurry of shouts from the inhabitant. Indigo quickly cast a Comprehend Languages and spoke with the scared Xvart and was able to negotiate a truce. The Xvart was none too trusting of the party but agreed to offer some of his food for the guards.
Once they were returned to the guard post the butcher informed them that there was a private entry way to the lower level from his shop. It was secret and led to a back area prep room on the lower level. The party gathered up and made for the secret entry. The door was secret and opened to a spiral stone staircase. At the bottom was an equally concealed door. Indigo found the latch and opened the door a sliver where he saw Lizard Men. A plan was devised to charge the room and attack the Lizard Men.
Indigo sprung open the door but banged it on his foot slowing the entry. Warrex, Books and Magenta charged in and Raifer and Parker tripped coming down the stairs blocking the entry. Warrex quickly swung his hand axe killing one Lizard. Two others moved to defend themselves and one broke to run away, Books close in pursuit. The remainder of the party scrambled in to the room and engaged the 2 remaining Lizard Men with Warrex dealing out significant damage and Magenta, Alydra and Booty dealing with the other.
Books followed the runner, Indigo attempted to slow him by using a Magic Missile but it misfired. Books then tackled the Lizard but was struck by the Lizard with a claw, his leg hit critically and incapacitated. The Lizard Man rolled off and misses Books who fires a Hold Person at him, freezing it. Warrex quickly grabbed the foe, dragged it back in to the prep room and killed the helpless foe. On the foe Books found a medallion bearing the symbol of an octopoid head, similar to the one that cursed him some time ago.
Indigo sneaked down the corridor using Invisibility and Feet of the Cat to conceal himself and to spy the main room where in he saw many incoherent Xvarts, about a dozen Lizard Men, 2 Githyanki and a cell in the center of the room that held 10 to 15 Xvarts, some men from the outpost, the Xvart King Parfek, some dwarves and one Drow. Beyond it was a strange cornucopia octopoid creature sitting in a bed of fungus. The main entry way was still blocked by a number of fungus controlled Xvarts stopped by the Continual Light spell.
A long discussion was held on the best way to attack the stronghold and the decision was to attack from the main entryway using as much of the oil as they could muster. Casks were brought, cracked and rolled in to the waiting Xvarts. Torches were tossed and the Xvarts were set ablaze, one cask exploding eliminating a large number of the possessed beings. Some began to escape the effects of the fungus as they burned and were shepherded out of the fire and away to the guard post. The rest were burned or shot with arrows. The bodies lay everywhere blocking the path down. Raifer and Magenta waded through clearing the way for the rest of the party and the battle was joined as the Lizard Men from around the room raced to the entry way.
Justin and Alydra dropped a Lizard man with ranged fire. Warrex, Raifer and Magenta moved to engage others. Booty moved to thin the oil fire to allow more party members direct access at the tentacled beast. A Githyanki maneuvered to attack the group as Justin fired at him. The Gith deflected the arrow and moved to engage throwing a dagger that missed but embedded in the wall. As it engaged Justin, he struck and inflicted damage and poison. But he struck back using the poison from the Xvart storeroom and the Gith was immobilized, where upon Raifer snapped it’s neck to dispatch it.
Indigo and Warrex carried oil casks hurling them at the tentacled beast, dousing both it and the fungus bed it lay in. The creature attempted several magical attacks that failed, leaving it defenseless. Indigo evoked an Aganaver’s Scorcher setting the oil ablaze. The creature and the fungus burned swiftly and an interesting side effect occurred as the mass of incoherent Xvarts began to come around and the other evil guardians fell to the ground unconscious.
The remaining Gith was tied and bound. Raifer went over to the cage and unlocked it. The prisoners were set free and the Drow allowed to walk away unharmed. Raifer and the King quickly exchanged some words about establishing better communication between the outpost and the Xvart watch posts. Further discussion to be had later to determine specifics.
