Not much could be done except tend to the event and then high tail it out of town as quick as possible. The group split in to several areas of the grounds. Some were helping Jerri in the kitchen while others served as waiters and waitresses and some as security. The women were all asked to perform their duties in extremely skimpy serving wench attire. But after a brief objection and some discussion, it was decided to make the best of it.
The guests arrived in all their splendor. Their were 12 knights expected and some royalty from the surrouding area including a dwarf or two. It was surprising that the knights all wore not ceremonial but real weapons. One knight, called Sir Al Toid, had a sword that was plainly magical and later revealed to be sentient. All the guests that came made charitable donations to the church and settled in for a feast. But one knight did not show. Sir Colvin was not present for the festivities.
The group was on their guard from the beginning and when one guest started roaming the grounds in and around the other guests, the group became suspicious. Alydra moved up behind the man and attempted to smack him with her serving tray. But she missed and hit a guest. An arguement ensued and Jade attempted to ease the trouble and get themselves out of a sticky situation. As an arguement ensued, the woman that had been hit by the tray was struck by a crossbow bolt. Mass chaos followed. Guests ran for cover. Alydra and others in the group were herded back to the kitchen since none had weapons, the knights arose in sync and raced off in the direction of the crossbow fire.
As the group attempted to work their way back in to the kitchen, it was discovered that the man Alydra attempted to strike was another security agent for the event. They argued about going back in to the kitchen and Jerri ordered them out of his domain, but the entire team was now piling in to the area. Garan and Alydra decided to run for their equipment, but that was in another building and would take time to retrieve. As they attempted to run out of the building crossing the courtyard, crossbow bolts came down on them, shot from the opposing buildings roof. Fortunately they shots missed and embedded in the wall of the first building. The dwarves then fell back.
At that point the knights came back with a dwarf body in tow. Sir Al Toid informed the group about what he now knew. They were aware of the problem with the dwarves and had heard that Sir Colvin may have betrayed the group. They were thus prepared for trouble and were ready to get involved at the behest of the Christian Church. The group had a man on the inside and the knights had been seeking an opportunity to get involved and with one of their own having betrayed them, this was now the time.
The group fell back to the rectory where their equipment was housed. They quickly donned all their material and were about to make their way out of town, but Sir Al Toid bade them stay. He and the fellow knights would protect them that night and then escort them to Al-Alin. It took some convincing as many of the group were still expecting that someone of the knights present was going to turn on them, and they expected that someone to be Sir Al Toid, curiously strong as he was (yes, I had to get that in at least once). But he gradually gained their trust as he shared more information on the situation, which included revealing the link between the two towns. Father Mallory had a child in Sudalon. The only decent cop in town whom the group had run in to, Sgt. Eddie Mallory.
They group decided to trust the knights. They set off in the morning and made their way to Al-Alin in 7 days without any incident. When they reached the boarders of the dwarven kingdon, the knights split off and made their way back. The group passed through the mountains and in to the kingdom and once inside they split up to accomplish their tasks faster.
The bulk of the group decided to head for a bar to get drunk. Jerri, Jade, Cade and Sasha went to see the king. By unusual means, Jerri was actually able to convince the receiving court member to allow them in after he dropped hints about the impending wars. Once inside, he told the story as he knew it, only confusing the King. But he revealed details of his and Jade's incarceration. While troubled by this news, the King had to place them under arrest. he revealed that his kingdom had an alliance with the other kingdom and he was required to do so. But that he would investigate the issue and hold the prisoners in the castle in very comfortable quarters. He was suspicious of the people of Sudalon and needed some proof to change the arrangements and this might just be it.
Garan, Oscar and Willie went over to the Moradin church to speak with the high priest. So important it was that Oscar and Willie both took baths to clean up and present themselves as best they could. they arrived and were quickly given access after showing the sealed document they were given by Jocelyn in Sudalon. The high priest, Arvin, accepted their story and confirmed the information through the message received. He had the group join him and the clergy had a caravan of coaches swing by the bar to pick up the mostly already drunk group at the bar and then headed over to the castle.
Arvin spoke with the King and Jerri and Jade were released. The King informed the group that they would be housed in the castle and protected. he now had to visit Sudalon himself to straighten out the matter. The group took advantage of the facilities available to them and stayed as the kings guest for nearly a month. When he returned, the King announced that the treaty between the two kingdoms was no more and that they were now at war. The group was free to go and should do so quickly. The members of the group that were escaped prisoners would still be considered outlaws by Sudalon but would be protected by Al-Alin whenever and wherever it was possible.
But the worst news was that of the Red Guard. That was the name Al-Alin put on the assassins that had been sent out to kill them. They would likely keep after the group until they had found them. The group decided it was time to go. They made their way out of the kingdom and headed east for some main roads that could lead them back to the intercities and Ox Baker. But first they would have to cross the Right River.
The river is very wide and swift and there are only a few crossing points and there only by ferry. They made arrangements and corssed the river. This part of the journey up to arriving on the far side of the rivere had taken another 3 days. The river master warned them to stay away from the base of the mountains on their east as there were many wild creatures that hunted there. So the group stayed closer to the river.
On their first day of travel they were set upon by Sahuaghin from the river. They sprang out of the water and attacked in a group. Armed with nets and tridents they closed as quickly as they could. The group fired off rounds of arrows to cut in to the ranks as they closed and one was dropped before they could engage. But as they engaged, they hurled their nets to entangle people and were successful on Jack, Tyrade, Garan and Oscar. Garan cast a Darkness spell to hide himself now that he was entangled. And those with bows continued to fire, but now the creatures revealed that the were skilled in deflecting arrows. It was now necessary to use engage weapons on them exclusively.
But a Sleep spell they could not deflect and Jade used that on one of them successfully. All the other members were able to struggle free of the nets before being charge attacked by the creatures. It became quickly obvious that the sea beings were better with their nets than their tridents as they missed attacks over and over and the group was now gaining the advantage. Sasha dropped one with a sling bullet and Willie issue a coup de grace on the figure put to sleep. Garan now out of immediate danger, dispelled his Darkness and the battles continued.
The Sahuaghin realized they were no longer in command and decided to cut and run for the water. A couple of shots were fired at them as the fled but the living ones made it to their safety. The dead were searched and a few coins were found. The bodies were thrown in to the river and the party reformed their group and moved on.
