An Axe to Grind

The Baker family decided to go out for a walk. Ox, KC and Jeri found their way through the city when a thought struck. They would try to take over one of the local prostitution rings and use the profits to fund the orphanage. Makes perfect sense. They would be making money off one of the industries that sent them some of their kids.

They came across a real slimey, weasel of a guy who readily identified himself as the local coordinator of favors. KC immediately tried to attack him. A dead pimp meant they could take his girls for themselves and get ALL the profits. What the Bakers did not plan on were Jimmy and Pete. As KC attempted to strike the pimp Jimmy quickly moved in and pulled the bat from his hand. Ox, backing up his son, gave an effort with his glaive. But this attack was adroitly parried aside by Jimmy with his new bat. After a quick scolding, the bat was returned, but just as quickly, KC again went to attack. Were it not for his lack of reason, the directions from the pimp for KC to go knock himself out might have lead to nothing. But this was KC and he bashed his own head. Dropping himself out.

Oolst was crossing town while this action took place and soaked in the events. Ox decided on another tack and offered a deal to the pimp. He would offer a place for the women and their illegitimate offspring in return for some funding for the orphanage. The deal was made and Ox is now searching for an expansion site for his place. As the details were ironed out, Oolst doubled over in pain. The pain grew quickly and he tried to return home when he fell over. They Bakers though to take him to the police chief whom they had dealt with before and they knew to be a wizard. Not there when they arrived, they spoke with Waylon, a lieutenant. He was less than helpful.

Oolst was burning up, shots of pain all through his body and across his back. A quick look under his tunic showed severe burns across his back. KC picked him up and on Oolst's request, they went to Vora's. Running as fast as they could and sending for Gwen, who had been looking after his health since their return from the islands. Vora was at a loss. The only possibility being the effects from the special battle axe he had found and carried. They tried to pour healing potion across the wound and it had the effect of a local anaesthetic, but did not heal the damage. Oolst began to swoon and as they examined his back more closely a shadowy image of the axe could be seen across his back. They sent a group to retrieve it from the hiding place he had placed it in.

Quickly found in Oolst's home by KC, he opened the case holding the axe and it disappeared shooting out the door and racing towards the owner. The group followed quickly and arrived at Vora's as Oolst was trying to remove it from its' holstered place on his back. There it had magically placed itself. As he drew the weapon his entire demeanor changed. He went from the likable dwarf to a mad raving lunatic. He began to shout and dart about the room. Hurricaine, who had heard about the trouble and came to help, attempted to calm him down. His playful sparring toss became serious when he saw how intent his partner was. They tone changed. They group now tried to subdue the dwarf.

Oolst would have none of it. He threw one man over his shoulder and tried to escape, jumping over the body. As he turned, he pointed his axe at the crowd of friends and "fired" two streaks of blue light at them. None hit, but the power of the beam was obvious. The group moved to knock him down. Gwen, Hurricaine and Joshua gave chase and engaged him. Ox and KC decided that they should have a family discussion about the situation and proceeded to beat up on each other. Hurricaine dragged down Oolst and took him into hand to hand.

The two rolled for a bit until one of the blasts from the axe, which he wielded more like a small hand item than a pole arm, hit Hurricaine square on, blowing a hole in his gut. The group moved in to do serious damage now. Oolst ran and headed for the spring and the security of the water and jumped in. While this was going on, Ox and KC traded blows and eventually Ox went too far and actually inflicted too much pain on his kid. He had to perform quick healing on him or KC would have died.

Now under the docks outside of Vora's, Oolst was hiding. The group tried to follow him. Blood was pouring from many of his wounds that the group had inflicted while he rolled around in the pile with Hurricaine. KC tried to distract him by splashing under the dock, but only provided a good target. Oolst let go with another blast that blew off the head of KC. Ox infuriated, hit him with a poisoned Kapar to finish the dwarf. Both bodies were dragged from the water.

Ox wanted the head of his son's killer, but the group dissuaded him, instead convincing him that time was critical. They had to get them to a church for saving by a priest. Hurricaine carried Oolst. He drank a potion of speed and raced to the church while Ox carried KC behind. The church could do nothing for Oolst and directed him to be taken to the Dwarven temple. The priests were able to bring back KC (for a stiff price).

At the Dwarven temple the local priests examined Oolst and found nothing they could heal. But he was not dead. His spirit was present, and visible, able to communicate with those present. The clerics were able to discern that he was sonehow needed, the axe was needed and the two were tied together. But the axe is a powerful item and it caused too much harm to the body. The clerics said that they knew he and his axe were important to the "next war" and had to be preserved. His body was now placed in a temporal stasis, only to be aroused when the power was needed. Oolst relayed that he could now somehow see in to two worlds, dimensions or planes of existence. He saw another Midway exactly where this world's Midway stood, only the other one was on an island.

Rollin met up at the temple at the request of Hurricaine. They discussed the situation and decided it was time to leave town. Ox had vowed to get even with Oolst and Hurricaine was a target by proxy due to some of his actions to help the dwarf. Plans were now started to get out of town.
